While copyright technically exists from the moment a work is created and fixed in a tangible medium, registration is highly recommended. It serves as prima facie evidence of ownership in court, making it significantly easier to prove infringement and claim damages.

Generally, copyright protection in India lasts for the lifetime of the author plus sixty years from the beginning of the calendar year next following the year in which the author dies. For cinematograph films, sound recordings, photographs, government works, and works of international organizations, the term is sixty years from the date of publication.

Key documents include the applicant's identity proof (Aadhaar/PAN), address proof, a copy of the work to be copyrighted, NOC (No Objection Certificate) if the work is published by someone other than the applicant, and a power of attorney if filed through an agent.

A business name, logo, or tagline is generally protected under Trademark law. While a logo *can* have artistic elements that might fall under copyright, its primary function for brand identification means trademark registration is the more appropriate and effective way to protect it.
